In general, you should select a G4 LED bulb replacement bulb which has the LEDs facing the direction in which you want the light to throw.
While your original incandescent bulb was isotropic (omni-directional), LEDs benefit by being directional and are much more efficient with the LEDs facing toward the surface to be illuminated. The exception is all-around lights like anchor lights, or lamps with a glass, opaque, or fabric shades. In these cases you should select an omni-directional LED bulb.
