Bayonet bulbs are recognizable as "tail lamp" bulbs. They have the familiar push-and-twist type base. There are always two "frankenstein" tabs on the side of the base, and these tabs are either directly opposed, or are offset, with one tab higher on the base than the other. In addition to the tabs, some Bayonet bulbs have a single contact on the bottom, while others have a dual contact on the bottom.
The most common Bayonet type used on boats is the BAY15d, but we also see BAY15s, BA15d, BA15s and BA9s.
The designation is actually easy to decode:
- BA15s: (BA)yonet, (15)mm, (s)ingle contact
- BAY15d: (BA)yonet, (Y)=offset "indexed" tabs, (15)mm, (d)ual contact
- BA9s: (BA)yonet, (9)mm, (s)ingle contact
Bayonet bases are also sometimes referred to by their automotive numbers:
- BA15s = 1141, 1156
- BA15d = 1142
- BAY15d = 1157
